The Art of the Fugue is the culmination of Bachs experimentation in writing monothematic instrumental works and a profound testimony of his contralpuntal mastery and musical imagination. The unfinished fugue Fuga a 3 Soggetti (Contrapunctus XIV), a 4-voice triple fugue, have puzzled many scholars. There are different theories why it was left unfinished aswell as suggestions on how Bach imagined its completion. A note left in the manuscript by his son Carl Philip Emanuel tells that he actually died in the process of finishing it. But several scholars doubt this. Did Bach in fact leave the fugue unfinished intentionally, as a riddle to be solved for future generations? The latter theory, put forward by organist Indra Hughes in 2007, is the point of depature for my collaboration with artist Ken Friedman.
